The Little Zim lure.

There are many ways to use the Little Zim Fishing Lure but most of the time everyone uses it in the most simple way.

The Little Zim Lure weighs approximately 1/5 or .20 of an ounce. It could vary a little since they are hand made and a little more or a little less material could be applied when constructed but not enough for you to notice between lures when fishing.

The most common method of fishing with this lure is to just tie it onto your line of any lightweight fishing pole you can purchase from any discount department store. The closed face Zebco or any spin cast open face reels work great and any weight line up to 10 pound test is good. You then just cast the little Zim around docks or from a boat around submerged structure like rocks or sunken logs where fish usually hang out to ambush baitfish and other food. This is the most common way this lure is used.

You can also slow troll this lure behind your boat with this same rig. Just toss the lure out behind your slow moving boat and keep in mind that the more line you put out the deeper the lure will go. You can include a double swivel about twelve inches in front of your lure to prevent your line from twisting or you can put a snap swivel at the end of your line and attach the Little Zim to the snap swivel to help prevent line twisting.

I have had the best results from these two methods of fishing.

I also use the Little Zim in what I call Spider Rig Fishing in the spring for Crappie. I fish with 10 or 12 long poles around 12 feet long resembling cane poles using rod holders that encircle the boat and you move the boat slowly with your electric trolling motor. Fishing with more than one pole in some states is illegal but you can fish with one or two poles  Each pole has 8 pound test line with a ¼ to 3/8 ounce barrel lead weight then a small red bead and then a double swivel . I tie an 18 inch 4 pound test leader line onto the double swivel and then tie the Little Zim on the end of the leader line. You let out enough line to reach the depth you desire straight down and move the boat forward slowly making a slow trolling motion. Up north they call this back trolling where they fish out the back of the boat and backup slowly offering the same effect. You use a very light weight leader line in case you get hung up, you can break the leader line and just tie on a new lure and not lose everything or possibly break your rod tip.

In the warmest weather when the fish go deep to cooler water  I use a heavier rod and reel with 12 to 20 pound test line with a swivel and I use any style crank  bait that will dive to the depth  I want. I personally use model 7A Bombers with a Fire Tiger or Red CrawDad color that will dive to around 15 feet. I then put a  double swivel on the split ring where the front hooks are attached and I usually remove the rear hooks to keep the line from tangleing in the rear hooks. I tie an 18 inch leader line of the same weight that is on my reel and then tie the Little Zim on the end of the leader line. I troll this rig around drop offs of sand bars and the river banks in 15 to 25 foot depths. Again, the more line you let out and the faster you troll, the deeper your lure will go with this rig. This gets you down to where the fish are and the Little Zim is appealing to most of them.

Agood fish finder is an important tool to good fishing and allows you to survey the bottom contour so you can stay in deep water or to find the drop-offs for better fishing. The right lure is also important and The “LITTLE ZIM” is the right lure.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO TRIM THE FEATHERS CLOSE TO THE HOOK IF YOU GET STRIKES BUT THE FISH DON’T GET HOOKED. THEY NIP AT THE FEATHERS AND MISS THE HOOKS SOMETIMES. SHORTENING THE FEATHERS ELIMINATES THIS PROBLEM.
